Jacob Loewentheil’s newly published The Psychological Portrait: Marcel Sternberger’s Revelations in Photography is featured in New York Magazine’s The Cut.

“’Psychological portraiture’ was, for Sternberger, portraiture as only the camera could make it,” Phillip Prodger (Head of Photographs, National Portrait Gallery) writes in the book’s foreword. “Seeking something more genuine and spontaneous, he instead sought the moments when sitters had dropped their guard. These precious instants provided a glimpse of true character.”

Iconic figures of the 20th century represented in the book include Frida Kahlo, Sigmund Freud, Diego Rivera, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Albert  Einstein. This is the first book devoted to the work of Marcel Sternberger, a major figure in 20th-century portrait photography.
