BEGIN, MENACHEM. The Revolt

London: W. H. Allen, [1951]

Original red cloth, without dust jacket. Very good.

First edition in English. Inscribed and signed by Begin in 1979 to Victor Ross (1920- 2021), chairman of Reader’s Digest in Europe.

This is Begin’s firsthand account of the armed revolt of the Irgun against Britain and Arab opposition in Palestine in the 1940s. Though the British put a price on Begin’s head, he eluded them. Begin led the Irgun until the establishment of the state of Israel in 1948. He headed the opposition from 1948 until 1977 when he was elected Israel’s sixth prime minister. He and Anwar Sadat reached the Camp David Accords in 1978, the first peace treaty in Israel’s history, resulting in both men receiving the Nobel Peace Prize.
